Anindya Paul Chowdhury, Director, PC Colour

Dealing in PC fabrics, PC Colour had its humble beginnings in 1989, catering to the needs of the textile industry. The demand for the fabric was high at the time for which they had a factory dedicated to processing. Complications arose, such as when their winch system-based dyeing couldn’t keep up with the quality norms and also the utility consumption was too high since the winch dyeing machines require high volume of water. It was for these reasons that they decided to build a new factory in 2010, outfitted with the best available machines in the market. These have seen nothing but a stellar performance in the 11 years since.

Currently, PC Colour owns two units with a production capacity of 50 tons a day. Their prime focus has been on knitted fabrics with dyeing and printing also being the areas they excel at. The company has their in-house production of knitting, dyeing, printing and finishing. These factors, along with their uncompromising focus on upholding the quality of their product, continue to be the reason for the large and diverse customer base. According to Director Anindya Paul Chowdhury, the reason for the building of their unit in 2010 was due to the sheer potential he realised by having a process house with the latest machinery – something that wasn’t recognised until much later by his competitors.

This was due to the widespread use of the winch system. Additionally, he foresaw the booming market that would soon arise for knitted fabric and decided to venture into the field. PC Colour was one of the pioneers in spandex fabric processing at a time when others weren’t willing to do so. While it was a difficult journey, it proved to be the most fruitful due to the market growing rapidly in the years following their choice, which led to a significant increase in production. With a rise in market demand, there also opened up scope for innovation. The company owns an innovative 32 gauge knitting machine for lycra fabrics, which had, at that time, never been seen before in the market.

Specialisation and Technology

By elaborating on the areas in which they specialise in, Chowdhury succinctly describes the unique selling point of PC Colour. With few other companies in the market having as much knowledge or experience with knitted and lycra fabrics, and in possession of state-of-the-art technology, the company has rightly earned its vast customer base. Currently, they are focusing their attention more on printing with a second plant constructed in 2020. Their current plan forward is to venture into woven fabrics due to there being a lack of players in the field, especially in Kolkata.

It wouldn’t be a long shot to say that a large part of their success can be attributed to their stellar machinery. Chowdhury’s insistence that their factories get outfitted with the very best machines has proved to be a brilliant business decision. A long time and trusted business partner of theirs has been A.T.E. which has been the provider of almost all the machines owned by PC Colour. Chowdhury hasn’t ever regretted buying from them throughout the course of their business relationship mainly due to the guidance they offer as well as their hands-on resolving of issues.

Long-Standing Partnership with A.T.E

A.T.E. offers the best available technology from the global market as a complete package for processing cotton as well as synthetic knit fabrics. While pioneers like A P Chowdhury require machines that can process the fabric of their choice, machines that can maintain product quality consistently is what draws them to a company like A.T.E. With the recent opening of an automation division, A.T.E. has demonstrated its commitment towards upgrading their machinery and integrating the latest kinds of software and technology into their products. A glowing testimonial from Chowdhury goes to show that the relationship between the two companies is incredibly strong in terms of trust and deliverance.

Challenges and Growth

The pandemic left its mark on the company on more than one occasion with production halted for at least 2-3 months each time a lockdown was announced by the government. However, the company did manage to bounce back from the ill-effects and continued on the path towards growth and expansion. With sustainability being a rising issue in the textile industry due to the polluting nature of many processes, the company has decided to implement zero liquid discharge (ZLD) technology in their factory in the near future in order to reduce their environmental footprint.

When asked about the company’s future, Chowdhury stated that they expect at least a 22-25 per cent rise in annual revenue per year with the shift to woven fabric production. Printing is a future area of expansion for PC Colour with the required machines already having been bought and ready to function. The company has dedicated itself to developing the setups required for printing and weaving, and admittedly isn’t planning on any other ventures as of now. However, Chowdhury has expressed an interest in technical textiles, which might be made in the years to come.
